yesterday, i posted jason’s top ten things we’ve made in the last year.
today, it’s my turn. while we agree on several dishes, you’ll notice my selection is a little less dumpling heavy. enjoy!
top 10 main dishes
10. wilted greens and pasta with a poached egg in a browned lemon butter sauce – there are several components to this dish that need to be made separately before being put together, but once together, you’ll see what i’m talking about.
9. afghan dumplings with lamb kofta and yogurt sauce – if i’m going to pick a dumpling, it’s going to be this one. they just stand out from all the others we’ve made.
8. paprika marinated pork chops with roasted squash and red onion in a tahini sauce – it’s a mouthful, i know. the pork chops in this dish are great but it’s really the vegetables that stand out to me. it’s a perfect fall or winter dish. and guess what: winter is coming.
7. warm beet and orzo salad – on the other hand, if you want a lighter yet still very filling and satisfying meal, this salad is great. this dish has the right variety of flavors and textures to make it interesting to eat but still easy to make.
6. sroasted cabbage with spicy lime dressing – this recipe opened my eyes to the wonders of cabbage. i absolutely adore the sauce and cannot believe how dark these photos are*. sorry. try it anyways. (*photos updated in january 2014 – much better).
5. zucchini fritters – yup, this made both of our lists. just so good. don’t need to say much more.
4. roasted oyster mushrooms and shrimp with a delicious sauce – with a delicious sauce is an understatement. i love all the asian flavors in this dish. bonus: it takes 15 minutes to make.
3. lentil cakes tikka masala – on both of our lists again. for good reason. eat these.
2. ginger scallion salmon with brussel sprouts – another asian inspired sauce makes my list, this time drizzled on top of salmon and brussel sprouts. delicious, colorful, and unique.
1. braised moroccan chicken with couscous – well we agree on the number one dish, so that has to say something, right? i just can’t get enough of it.
best appetizer: roasted vegetable terrine with goat cheese – the photos are a D- but the dish is so so awesome. i need to make this again, now. (photos redone in July 2014)
best soup: sweet potato soup with za’atar oil and feta – hands down, no question about it. especially because i ate this soup for about 7 days straight and didn’t get sick of it. it’s truly lovely.
best breakfast: steel cut oats with poached egg, leeks, and feta – to be made on cold winter mornings when you need something to stick to your ribs for the remainder of the day.
best dessert: pecan pie – you’ll have to try pretty hard not to eat two pieces.
best home project: chalkboard in the pantry – i get an embarrassing amount of satisfaction from this simple little project. everything is labeled. ahhh.
best of the other stuff: recreating our parents’ photos from the 70s for our wedding – have to agree with jason on this one. although i don’t know if he fully captured my father’s facial expression.
i hope you enjoyed the one year recap, it was certainly fun for us to do. if you’re inspired to make any of these dishes or do any projects, please, comment away!
