Portland, surgery, and pottery—three things that have nothing to do with each other but I figured I’d save for a single post.
Let’s start with Portland–Jason and I spent the weekend there, and each time I come back from the Pacific Northwest I have to ask myself why we don’t live there. Everything there is good. There is no mediocrity–it is a city that doesn’t support generalists. Each store and restaurant is specifically good at that one thing—if you’re going to sell salt, you’re going to sell 100 varieties of it and you’re going to know every tiny detail about each type. You’re going to live and breathe it, you’re going to love it, and you’ll probably tattoo it on your body. That’s just how they roll.
In three days in Portland, we hiked the coast, walked the city, shopped, floated in a sensory deprivation chamber, and ate at 8 different restaurants all of which blew me out of the water. Breakfast at Public Domain, Mother’s, and Fresh Pot. Lunch at Ecola Seafoods out by Cannon Beach, Pok Pok, and Pok Pok again. Yes, the Thai restaurant is so good we went there twice, because the first time we were a little rushed and so we didn’t feel like we got the full experience. Dinner at Little Bird, Higgins, and Andina. The city loves food, and I love it because of that.
We came back to Madison just in time for my knee surgery, which went exactly as planned, and one day later I’m already up and able to move around without crutches. Let’s just hope this is the last of it.
And today in an attempt to get out of the house, Jason took me to pick up the pottery I had made at Midwest Clay Project.
Over the last couple of months, I’ve been taking a beginners course on throwing. It was something I got to look forward to each week and here are the results.
What I learned in this class is that I suck at bowls and mugs, but plates—now that’s my calling.
You’ll be seeing more of my own pottery pictured on future TIMT blog posts. Cheers for variety!
